The third stage of the FIDE Grand Prix series 2014-2015 was officially inaugurated in the presence of the players, FIDE CEO Geoffrey Borg,

President of the Georgian Chess Federation Giorgi Giorgadze, Chairman of the Appeals Committee Nona Gaprindashvili and Chief Arbiter Faik Gasanov.

During the opening speech Mr. Borg thanked the Georgian Chess Federation and its President Mr. Giorgadze for stepping in last November to organize this event.

Mr.Borg added that the chess world greatly appreciates the effort invested by the Georgian Chess Federation to prepare the tournament in such a short timeframe.

Mr.Gasanov reminded the participants about the time control, zero tolerance rule and no-draws rule (30 moves). He proceeded with drawing of lots and composing the pairings.

It is my pleasure to welcome you on behalf of the Government of Georgia and the Georgian sports community to our beautiful country.

The Georgian side is very honored and delighted to host the World Grand-Prix! As you may be aware, Georgia is a European country with reach sports history. Our sports traditions go long back to the ancient time. To our pride the Georgian athletes have won a total of 118 medals, among them 37 gold medals), both in Soviet and Independence periods. You might agree that for a small nation with barely 4 million of population this record is indeed outstanding.

I am delighted to offer our respectable guests and the participants of Grand Prix the most hospitable welcome on behalf of Georgian Chess Federation.
The capital city of Georgia-Tbilisi-will host the planet’s most famous chess players’ competitions from 14th February. Champions of the whole world and Europe, winners of Chess Olympiads – it is a short list of our participants’ titles which they have earned throughout their careers.
Our lovely (and one of the most ancient) capital city has an outstanding tradition of hospitability and I strongly believe that our guests will never forget days spent in Tbilisi and those days will become pleasing memories for them.

The third stage of FIDE GP series 2014-2015 in Tbilisi

The third stage of the Grand Prix series 2014-2015 will take place in Tbilisi (Georgia) from the 14th until 27th of February 2015. The organizers of the tournament are the Georgian Chess Federation, the Ministry of Sport and Youth of Georgia and Tbilisi City Hall. SOCAR Energy Georgia is the general sponsor of the event.
The opening ceremony and the games will be held at the Courtyard by Marriott Tbilisi.


The tournament follows the first and second stages which took place in Baku and Tashkent in 2014. Fabiano Caruana (ITA) and Boris Gelfand (ISR) tied for the first place in Baku Grand Prix. The sole winner of the second stage was Dmitry Andreikin.
Since the series have four tournaments, every result is count and after two stages Fabiano Caruana leads in overall Grand Prix standings (230 points), followed by Hikaru Nakamura (207 points) and Dmitry Andreikin (190 points).
